Medal of John VIII Palaeologus, Byzantine, c1440. Artist: Pisanello
Medal of John VIII Palaeologus, Byzantine, c1440. The Byzantine emperor John VIII (1390-1448), with a beard and wearing a tall hat with a peaked brim. The medal was made on the occasion of his visit to Ferrara, Italy in 1438 at the invitation of Pope Eugenius IV, for the Council intended to unite the Greek and Latin churches. It is probably a good likeness as it was done from eye-witness drawings. The idea for the medals production was likely to have come from the court of the Este (the ruling family of Ferrara) but it is generally thought that it was inspired by two medals of the Roman emperors Constantine and Heraclius, of early fifteenth-century French workmanship, then thought to have been antique

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite Medal of John VIII Palaeologus, a Byzantine emperor who reigned from 1390 to 1448. Created by the talented artist Pisanello around 1440, this bronze artifact captures the emperor's likeness with remarkable precision. John VIII is depicted wearing a tall hat adorned with a peaked brim and sporting an impressive beard, symbolizing his authority and regality. The medal was crafted to commemorate John VIII's visit to Ferrara, Italy in 1438 at the invitation of Pope Eugenius IV. This momentous occasion aimed to unite the Greek and Latin churches through the Council held during his stay. The inspiration for producing these medals likely originated from the court of Este, Ferrara's ruling family. Interestingly, they drew influence from two earlier French medals depicting Roman emperors Constantine and Heraclius. With its vibrant colors and oriental flair, this artifact offers us a glimpse into Byzantine culture during the fifteenth century. It serves as both a testament to artistic skill and an important historical document that reflects political alliances between powerful figures of that era. Preserved through time, this print allows us to appreciate Pisanello's talent while providing insight into one of history's significant moments – when East met West in pursuit of religious unity under Pope Eugenius IV’s guidance.
