Marble Canyon, 1874. Creator: W. J. Linton

Marble Canyon, 1874. View of Marble Canyon which marks the beginning of the Grand Canyon, Arizona, USA. The most beautiful of all the canyons begins at the mouth of the Paria [River], and extends to the junction of the Little Colorado, or Chiquito, as it is called by the Indians. This part of the gorge is named Marble Canyon, and is sixty-five and a half miles long. The walls are of limestone or marble, beautifully carved and polished, and the forms assumed have the most remarkable resemblances to ruined architecture...The colors of the marble are various - pink, brown, gray, white, slate-color, and vermilion.... From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. II, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1874]

Marble Canyon, 1874 - A Majestic Glimpse into Nature's Architectural Masterpiece

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This photo print, captured by the talented W. J. Linton in 1874, transports us to the breathtaking Marble Canyon in Arizona, USA. Serving as the gateway to the iconic Grand Canyon, this awe-inspiring canyon stretches an impressive sixty-five and a half miles from the mouth of the Paria River to its convergence with the Little Colorado. Linton's lens skillfully captures nature's artistic prowess within these limestone or marble walls that have been intricately carved and polished over time. The resulting formations bear an uncanny resemblance to ancient ruins, evoking a sense of wonder and admiration for their sheer beauty. The colors adorning this geological marvel are nothing short of extraordinary; hues ranging from delicate pinks and browns to striking grays, whites, slate-colors, and even vibrant vermilion create a visual symphony against the backdrop of rugged cliffs. Originally featured in "Picturesque America" edited by William Cullen Bryant in 1874, this remarkable image stands as a testament to both Linton's talent behind the camera and his ability to convey nature's grandeur through his artistry. As we gaze upon this timeless masterpiece today, it serves as a reminder of our planet's incredible diversity and reminds us why Marble Canyon continues to be hailed as one of America's most cherished natural wonders.
