EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a detailed map depicting the relentless Attack on Verdun during the First World War in 1916. The image, taken from "The Great World War: A History" edited by Frank A Mumby, provides a visual representation of the various stages in the first phase of this historic battle. On February 21,1916, at dawn, the German forces initiated their assault on the French lines east of the Meuse River. The map highlights the initial French position as well as their subsequent positions over four consecutive days as they were gradually pushed back by their adversaries. The final adjustment of the French line took place on Friday, February 25. This critical moment saw them crossing Poivre Hill and Douaumont Plateau in an effort to maintain control amidst intense fighting and strategic maneuvering. The imagery adds a sense of gravity to this significant historical event. It serves as a reminder of not only the geographical features that played a role in shaping this battlefield but also represents France's determined resistance against Germany during one of World War I's most infamous battles. As we reflect upon this photograph print today, it stands as a testament to those who fought valiantly for their country and reminds us of the immense sacrifices made during this tumultuous period in history.
