EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the excitement of the Manchester Regatta in 1844. The image, based on a sketch by Mr. Hayes, showcases boat races taking place on the picturesque River Irwell. The regatta featured four thrilling races that day, each with its own unique stakes and winners. The Stanhill Hall Stakes, valued at £10, was triumphantly claimed by Mr. Joness Fearless in a four-oar pleasure-boat race. In the two-oar boats category, Mr. Beardsalls Mystery emerged victorious in the Ordsall Stakes. However, it was the Swinton Hall Cup race that truly stole the show as Mr. Walkers Sons of the Dee from Chester clinched victory by half a length against tough competition from Manchester's Britannia boat and its young crew. The atmosphere surrounding this event is palpable through this engraving from "Illustrated London News" - an iconic newspaper of its time - capturing not only the intense racing action but also showcasing a bustling crowd gathered to witness these thrilling contests. This historic snapshot provides us with a glimpse into 19th-century Britain's love for sports and leisure activities along riversides like Irwell while highlighting Greater Manchester's rich cultural heritage. It serves as a reminder of how sporting events have long been cherished moments that unite communities and showcase human determination and skill on both land and water.
