EDITORS COMMENTS
This half-length portrait captures the image of Captain Christopher Fomich Makofskii, the Irkutsk city police chief in 1885. The photograph, taken in black and white, shows Makofskii facing right, dressed in his police uniform, complete with a beard that frames his stern yet thoughtful expression. The image bears an inscription on the reverse, addressed to Mr. Kennan, a well-known traveler in Russia, expressing gratitude and respect. At the time of Kennan's visit, Makofskii was regarded as one of the few more enlightened Russian officials in Siberia. However, Kennan noted that despite his progressive outlook, Makofskii remained oblivious to the great evils that existed within the Irkutsk prisons and was unable to show any sympathy for the principles of equality among men and individual liberty. This portrait, a relic from the 19th century, offers a glimpse into the life of a man who held a significant position in the Russian law enforcement system during a time of great change and upheaval. The image, with its rich historical context, serves as a reminder of the complexities and nuances of the Russian political landscape during the late 1800s. The photograph, with its intriguing backstory and fascinating subject, is a valuable addition to any collection of historical images, particularly those related to Russian history, law enforcement, and the meeting of frontiers between East and West.
