Her Majestys visit to the Cathedral at Cologne, 1845. Creator: Unknown
Her Majestys visit to the Cathedral at Cologne, 1845. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert on a royal visit to Germany. The carriages drove slowly round the area in which the Cathedral stands, the Queen being thus enabled to see the full beauty of the structure, which, although...it is unfinished, is nevertheless magnificent...The great tower, which is a miracle of lightness and elegance for so gigantic a mass, was to have been 500 feet high, but it is cut short at about 160. It was to have had a companion tower of the same height, which, however, was not even commenced. From the top of one of the towers, the Royal flag waved, and, singular to say, from the crane which was left by the workmen at the top of the tower when the work was left unfinished in the very early part of the sixteenth century. From " Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII

Her Majesty's visit to the Cathedral at Cologne, 1845
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this photo print, we are transported back to a momentous occasion in history - Queen Victoria and Prince Albert's royal visit to Germany. The image captures the grandeur of Cologne Cathedral, an architectural marvel that stands proudly despite being unfinished. As the carriages slowly make their way around the cathedral grounds, Queen Victoria is afforded a breathtaking view of the magnificent structure. Towering above all else is the great tower, a testament to both lightness and elegance despite its colossal size. Originally intended to reach a staggering height of 500 feet, it was unfortunately cut short at about 160 feet. Its companion tower never even saw construction. From one of these towers flies the Royal flag, an unexpected sight alongside an ancient crane left behind by workers centuries ago when construction ceased in the early sixteenth century. This juxtaposition symbolizes both continuity and change throughout time. The scene is filled with awe-inspiring details - from Gothic architecture that speaks volumes about medieval craftsmanship to crowds gathered below who witness this historic event unfold before their eyes. Through this engraving from "Illustrated London News" we catch a glimpse into an era where religion played a central role in society and monarchs held immense power. This remarkable photograph print serves as a window into history; it encapsulates not only Queen Victoria's reign but also showcases Germany's rich cultural heritage through its iconic cathedral.
