The Main Street of Agra, 1858. Creator: Unknown
The Main Street of Agra, 1858. This city, once the capital of India, is now much decayed, and consists of little more than this one street, running parallel to the Jumna, the rest being mere mud hovels. From the river it must formerly have presented a very striking appearance, being lined with palaces of the nobles, built during the reign of the great Acbar. Their ruins are still massive and imposing; and some tombs, in good preservation, are models of beauty, both in construction and material...The civil and military lines of the Europeans adjoined the city, but were entirely destroyed when the mutiny broke out, and the whole of the Christian population had to take refuge in the fort, where they were confined for some time, and their fate would have been watched with interest but for the superior claims of Delhi and Lucknow'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative black and white image captures the Main Street of Agra, India, in 1858, a time when the city, once the grand capital of Hindoostan during the Mughal Empire, had significantly decayed. The photograph shows a bustling street running parallel to the Jumna River, now reduced to little more than this one thoroughfare. In the distance, the ruins of once magnificent palaces and tombs constructed during the reign of the great Mughal ruler Akbar can be seen, their massive and imposing structures still standing as testament to the city's rich history. The European civil and military lines, which once adjoined the city, have been entirely destroyed during the 1857 mutiny, forcing the Christian population to take refuge in the fort. The image depicts a scene of everyday life on the Main Street, with men and women going about their business, bullock carts and ox carts transporting goods, and shops lining the street. The presence of a man and woman on the balcony of a building, observing the activity below, adds a sense of intimacy and human interest to the scene. This engraving was published in the Illustrated London News in 1858, providing a glimpse into the past of this historic city in Uttar Pradesh, India. The image is a reminder of the rich architectural heritage and cultural significance of Agra, which continues to attract visitors from around the world.
