Mahasiddha Mudra Siddha South Asian Statuette Tibet Tibetan Tibetan Buddhism Spiritual Leader

EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite mid-14th century sculpture depicts the revered Mahasiddha (Great Adept) Dampa Sangye, also known as Nagpopa (d. 1117). Dampa Sangye was a renowned Tibetan spiritual leader and one of the Eighty-Four Mahasiddhas, enlightened beings who are believed to have attained spiritual realization through unconventional means. The statue, made of copper alloy inlaid with silver and copper, stands approximately 11 inches tall. Dampa Sangye is depicted in a meditative posture, with his right hand in the mudra of teaching, or "varada," and his left hand in the mudra of reflection, or "chin mudra." These hand gestures symbolize the transmission of spiritual knowledge and the deep contemplation of inner wisdom, respectively. The Mahasiddha is adorned with traditional Tibetan attire, including a monastic robe, a crown ornamented with a trident, and a necklace of skulls. His serene expression and peaceful demeanor convey a sense of profound spiritual realization and inner peace. This sculpture is a testament to the rich artistic and cultural heritage of Tibetan Buddhism, which flourished during the medieval period. It is a rare and valuable example of the intricate metalwork techniques that were used to create sacred images and objects in Tibet and neighboring regions. The Mahasiddha Dampa Sangye (Nagpopa) statue is currently housed at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), where it is a beloved and inspiring presence for visitors from around the world. The statue's mysterious origins and enduring allure continue to captivate and intrigue scholars, art historians, and spiritual seekers alike.
