EDITORS COMMENTS
In this stunning 18th-century portrait painting by François-Hubert Drouais, we see two brothers from the House of Bourbon, Louis Stanislas Xavier, Count of Provence (1755-1824), and his elder brother, Louis Auguste, Duke of Berry (later Louis XVI) (1754-1793). The painting, created in 1757, is currently housed in the Museu de Arte de São Paulo in Brazil. Louis Stanislas Xavier, the younger brother, is depicted in a rich red robe, adorned with gold braid and a white collar, signifying his noble status. His brother, Louis Auguste, wears the blue sash of the Order of the Holy Spirit, a prestigious French order. Both brothers gaze intently at the viewer, exuding an air of confidence and authority. At the time of this painting, Louis Stanislas Xavier was the Count of Provence, a title he received in 1750 when he was made the governor of the Duchy of Provence. His elder brother, Louis Auguste, was the Dauphin of France, the heir apparent to the French throne. The painting is a fine example of the Rococo style, popular during the Sun King's reign, characterized by its intricate details, delicate colors, and ornate decoration. However, the brothers' fates would take very different turns. Louis Auguste would eventually become King Louis XVI of France and would be guillotined during the French Revolution in 1793. Louis Stanislas Xavier, on the other hand, would survive the revolution and would later become the King of Naples and Sicily. This painting offers a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the French aristocracy before the tumultuous events of the French Revolution. The brothers' regal attire and confident demeanor serve as a reminder of the absolute power and privilege held by the monarchy during this period.
