EDITORS COMMENTS
This 17th century print depicts Louis, the future Crown Prince of France, also known as the Grand Dauphin or Ludovicus Delphinus, at a young age. Born in 1661, Louis was the eldest son of King Louis XIV and Marie-Thérèse of Austria. In this portrait, the future monarch is shown dressed in the height of Baroque fashion, with a richly colored and textured doublet, breeches, and a plumed hat. He wears a pair of high, golden boots, known as carriage boots, which were a popular choice for the aristocracy during this period. The boots are adorned with intricate designs and are laced up to his thighs, indicating his status and wealth. The Prince is also seen carrying a walking stick, a sign of maturity and authority, and wearing a pair of elegant gloves. He is depicted in a casual pose, perhaps suggesting a moment of leisure or relaxation. The background of the print is left blank, drawing all attention to the young prince and his regal attire. Louis would go on to become the Dauphin of France in 1680, when his father remarried, and eventually the King of France upon his father's death in 1715. This print offers a glimpse into the fashion and culture of the Baroque era, as well as the life of a future monarch of significant historical importance.
