Lord Palmerston's study at Broadlands, 1865. Creator: Unknown

Lord Palmerston's study at Broadlands, 1865. Interior of the home of British politician Henry Temple, 2nd Viscount Palmerston, at Romsey in Hampshire. "My Lord's Study, " as it is called by the servants at Broadlands, ...though small and nowise sumptuous, is of much greater importance to us than all the rest of the place; for it contains a few things appropriated to his peculiar use, and bears the traces of his frequent occupation. It was here that he passed many hours alone, entering "his study" immediately after breakfast, and staying, perhaps, till three or four o'clock, when the favourite horse was saddled, and the brisk old gentleman, hale and hearty as ever, casting off all the burden of the British empire, all the weight of the European balance of powers, mounted for his daily ride - which he seldom omitted, whether along the miry roads of Hampshire or the noiseless galloping-ground in Rotten-row'. From "Illustrated London News", 1865. Heritage Images features heritage image collections. © The Print Collector/Heritage Images

EDITORS COMMENTS

Step into the intimate world of Lord Palmerston's study at Broadlands, a private sanctuary where one of Britain's most influential politicians spent many hours alone. This charming photograph, taken in 1865, captures the essence of this quiet retreat, revealing a space that is both humble and significant. Behind closed doors lies a treasure trove of personal artifacts and mementos carefully curated by Lord Palmerston himself. The room bears testament to his busy mind, with books stacked haphazardly on shelves and papers scattered across the desk. A hint of weariness can be detected in the worn leather armchair, where he would often sit for hours, pondering weighty matters of state. Despite its modest appearance, this study was a sanctuary where Lord Palmerston could escape the pressures of his high-profile role as Prime Minister. It is here that he found solace and inspiration, pouring over documents and correspondence late into the evening before mounting his horse for a brisk ride through Hampshire's rolling countryside or Rotten-Row. This photograph offers us a unique glimpse into the private life of Lord Palmerston, revealing not only his dedication to duty but also his love of nature and solitude. As we gaze upon this quiet study, we are reminded that even the most powerful among us need moments of peace and contemplation to recharge their energies.
