The London and Westminster Bank - Holborn Branch, 1854. Creator: Unknown
The London and Westminster Bank - Holborn Branch, 1854. Those who kept their accounts at this branch a year or two ago will remember the stifling air which met them on opening the shop door of the old place - ceiling about ten feet high - gas burning all day - dirt, darkness, and discomfort, everywhere - unfit even for the passing visit of a customer, and most obnoxious to the health of the employees doomed to inhale the foetid atmosphere daily for eight or nine hours. A healthful change has, however, been made. We now enter, through doors of British oak, one of the handsomest and most convenient offioes in London; giving immediately an impression of ample space, abundant light, and proper ventilation...The elevation is entirely of Portland stone'. The architect was Henry Baker. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print transports us back in time to the Holborn Branch of The London and Westminster Bank in 1854. For those who once conducted their financial affairs at this establishment, the memory of the old branch may still linger. The cramped, dimly lit space with its low ceiling and persistent gas lighting would hardly be described as inviting. The air was stifling, and the overall atmosphere was far from conducive to the health and comfort of customers or employees. However, the scene has undergone a remarkable transformation. As we step through the new doors of this elegant office, we are greeted with a sense of spaciousness, light, and freshness. The high ceiling, ample windows, and proper ventilation create an atmosphere that is not only more pleasant for customers but also healthier for the bank's employees. The architectural mastermind behind this transformation was Henry Baker, who designed the entire building in Portland stone. The elevation is a testament to Baker's skill and vision, with its clean lines and classic design. The Illustrated London News reported on the grand opening of the new branch in 1854, praising its modernity and convenience. This photograph print offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, showcasing the significant improvements in architecture and design that transformed the banking experience for Londoners in the 19th century.
