EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, titled "Lois and Her Nurse" is a beautiful illustration by Frederick Cayley Robinson. Created in 1923 for the book "A Book of Quaker Saints" written by L. V. Hodgkin, this artwork was intended to educate young Quaker children about their religious heritage. The scene depicts an intimate moment between Lois, a young girl with delicate ringlets cascading down her shoulders, and her nurse. They are seated inside a cozy domestic setting, surrounded by furniture that exudes warmth and comfort. The nurse attentively pours water into a cup while Lois patiently waits. Robinson's attention to detail is evident in every stroke of his brush. The monochrome pastel tones create a serene atmosphere that perfectly complements the religious theme of the book. Lois' direct gaze suggests innocence and curiosity as she engages with her caregiver. As an English painter, decorator, and illustrator, Robinson is renowned for his series of paintings called "Acts of Mercy". These works were commissioned for the Middlesex Hospital during World War I as symbols of compassion amidst turmoil. This remarkable print serves as both an artistic masterpiece and a historical artifact from early 20th-century Britain. It captures the essence of Quaker values such as simplicity, peace, and care for others – qualities that continue to resonate today.
