The Lock at Pontoise, 1872. Creator: Camille Pissarro (French, 1830-1903)
The Lock at Pontoise, 1872. This depiction of a lock on the river Oise is one of four such compositions inspired by the area of Pontoise, a village north of Paris. Pissarro moved to Pontoise after he returned from England following the Franco-Prussian War (1870-71). The ten years he stayed there were not only his most prolific, but also saw the height of his artistic talents. It was also in Pontoise that Pissarro worked with Edgar Degas (1834-1917), Mary Cassatt (1845-1926), and Paul Cezanne (1839-1906). Pissarros influence on Cezanne was especially important, as Pissarro encouraged him to paint en plein air, or outdoors. As a painter, Pissarro pursued many of the same goals as the Impressionists and exhibited with them from 1874 onward. However, the group is far from being unified stylistically, and there were many differences among its members. In contrast to other Impressionists, Pissarro was interested in darker tonalities, especially blues, greens, and browns. The more sober colours of his paintings suggest his debt to the earlier French artist Gustave Courbet (1819-1877)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Lock at Pontoise, 1872" by the renowned French artist Camille Pissarro. This particular artwork is one of four compositions inspired by the picturesque area of Pontoise, a charming village located north of Paris. After returning from England following the Franco-Prussian War, Pissarro settled in Pontoise for ten years, during which he experienced his most prolific and artistically fruitful period. Pissarro's time in Pontoise was not only marked by his own artistic achievements but also significant collaborations with other influential artists of the time. Working alongside Edgar Degas, Mary Cassatt, and Paul Cezanne, he played a pivotal role in shaping their artistic journeys. Notably, it was under Pissarro's guidance that Cezanne embraced painting en plein air or outdoors. While aligned with the Impressionist movement and exhibiting with them from 1874 onwards, Pissarro had distinct stylistic preferences that set him apart from his peers. His fascination with darker tonalities such as blues, greens, and browns distinguished him within the group. These more subdued colors reflect his admiration for Gustave Courbet's earlier works. This exquisite print allows art enthusiasts to appreciate both the beauty captured within "The Lock at Pontoise" and its historical significance as part of Camille Pissarro's remarkable oeuvre.
