Leaf from a Gradual: Initial (M) with St

Leaf from a Gradual: Initial (M) with St. Andrew (recto), c. 1480. This leaf was excised from a volume of a large set of choral books known to have been commissioned by Bartolomeo delle Rovere for Ferrara Cathedral. Delle Rovere, nephew of Pope Sixtus IV, was the Bishop of Ferrara from 1474 to 1494 and his arms appear in the rondel at the bottom of the page-a shield bearing an oak tree ( rovere in Italian) surmounted by a patriarchal cross, the symbol of his rank and authority. Payment records indicate that Argenta worked on the choir books for Ferrara Cathedral from 1478 to 1486. The initial M introduces the chant for the Introit (introduction) to the mass for the Feast of Saint Andrew, celebrated on November 30. This date also marks the beginning of the Advent season (leading to Christmas) in the liturgical calendar

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a leaf from a Gradual, specifically an initial (M) with St. Andrew, dating back to around 1480. Originally part of a grand set of choral books commissioned by Bartolomeo delle Rovere for Ferrara Cathedral, this leaf holds immense historical and artistic significance. Bartolomeo delle Rovere, the Bishop of Ferrara during that period and nephew of Pope Sixtus IV, had his family crest featured at the bottom of the page - a shield displaying an oak tree (rovere in Italian) topped with a patriarchal cross symbolizing his authority. The meticulous craftsmanship is evident through the use of gold on parchment and ink combined with tempera techniques. The initial M serves as an introduction to the chant for the Introit during the mass dedicated to Saint Andrew's Feast Day on November 30th. Additionally, this date marks the commencement of Advent season leading up to Christmas according to liturgical traditions. Created by Jacopo Filippo d'Argenta, payment records indicate his involvement in crafting these choir books for Ferrara Cathedral between 1478 and 1486. This piece exemplifies Argenta's mastery in manuscript illumination during Italy's Renaissance era. Preserved within The Cleveland Museum of Art collection, this remarkable artifact offers us a glimpse into both religious practices and artistic excellence prevalent in 15th-century Italy. Its intricate details and historical context make it an invaluable treasure worth cherishing for generations to come.
