Leaf Excised from a Breviary of Charles the Bold and Margaret of York... c. 1467-1470

Leaf Excised from a Breviary of Charles the Bold and Margaret of York: The Martyrdom of Saint Denis, c. 1467-1470. Simon Marmion was one of the most esteemed miniaturists of his generation. He was praised by the poet Jean Lemaire de Belges as the " prince of illumination." Marmion was a member of a family of painters from Amiens and likely trained in his fathers workshop before establishing his own workshop in Valenciennes. During the course of his career, he received numerous commissions from the Burgundian court, then resident in the Netherlands. In addition to manuscript illuminations, his commissions included paintings, altarpieces, portraits, and decorations for court festivities. This miniature comes from a deluxe breviary commissioned by the third duke of Burgundy, Philip the Good (1419-67), but completed after his death for his son and successor, Charles the Bold (1467-77), and his wife, Margaret of York. It survives with a sister leaf representing the Holy Virgins, now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. These two leaves are today the sole tangible remnants from a breviary that was well-documented in its time. It once contained 624 folios, 95 full-page miniatures, 12 calendar vignettes, and several thousand small initials and marginal decoration

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a leaf excised from a breviary of Charles the Bold and Margaret of York, dating back to the years 1467-1470. Created by Simon Marmion, one of the most esteemed miniaturists of his time, this artwork depicts "The Martyrdom of Saint Denis". Marmion's exceptional talent as an illuminator earned him high praise from poet Jean Lemaire de Belges, who hailed him as the "prince of illumination". Born into a family of painters in Amiens, Marmion likely honed his skills in his father's workshop before establishing his own studio in Valenciennes. Throughout his career, he received numerous prestigious commissions from the Burgundian court residing in the Netherlands. These commissions ranged from manuscript illuminations to paintings, altarpieces, portraits, and decorations for court festivities. Originally commissioned by Philip the Good (1419-67), Duke of Burgundy, this deluxe breviary was completed after his death for his son and successor Charles the Bold (1467-77) and Charles' wife Margaret of York. Today, only two leaves remain from this extensively documented breviary that once contained 624 folios with 95 full-page miniatures. This particular leaf is accompanied by its sister leaf representing the Holy Virgins at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. The surviving remnants offer us a glimpse into Marmion's extraordinary craftsmanship and provide valuable insights into medieval religious practices through their intricate details such as small initials and marginal decorations. This print serves as a testament to both Marmion's artistic prowess and our enduring fascination with historical artifacts like these illuminated manuscripts.
