Le Baiser de Judas, Paris Commune, 1871

The Paris Commune was established when the citizens of Paris, many of them armed National Guards, rebelled against the policies of the conservative government formed after the end of the Franco-Prussian War. The left-wing regime of the Commune held sway in Paris for two months until government troops retook the city in bloody fighting in May 1871. The events of the Commune were an inspiration to Karl Marx as well as later communist leaders including Lenin, Trotsky and Mao. From a private collection

Le Baiser de Judas, Paris Commune, 1871 - A Powerful Allegory of Betrayal and Revolution

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures the essence of a significant moment in history - the Paris Commune of 1871. Depicted through a thought-provoking cartoon, it draws a parallel between the downfall of the Commune and the betrayal of Christ by Judas' kiss. The image portrays an allegorical figure representing the Commune in place of Jesus, symbolizing their fight for justice and equality. The Paris Commune emerged when armed National Guards rebelled against the conservative government's policies after the Franco-Prussian War. For two months, this left-wing regime held sway over Paris until government troops violently recaptured the city in May 1871. Notably inspiring figures such as Karl Marx, Lenin, Trotsky, and Mao found inspiration in these events that unfolded during this tumultuous period. Their ideologies were shaped by witnessing ordinary citizens rise up against repression and fight for their rights. Through vibrant colors and intricate details within military uniforms and caricatures, this artwork encapsulates both satire and profound political commentary. It serves as a reminder that even amidst chaos and bloodshed, people can unite to challenge oppressive systems.
