EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, titled "Landscape of the Vicinity of Okhotsk," was created by Russian artist Ivan Dem'ianovich Bulychev in 1856. The image is part of a larger collection of 64 finely drawn illustrations, compiled in an album documenting expeditions to Siberia and the Russian Far East, primarily in the late 19th century. Bulychev, a member of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society, meticulously collected these illustrations from various publications and bound them together. The print depicts a breathtaking view of the coastline near Okhotsk, a port city located on the eastern coast of the Sea of Okhotsk in the Russian Far East. The image showcases the meeting of land and sea, with the horizon line dividing the rocky, rugged terrain from the tranquil, blue-gray waters. The coastline is dotted with large, gray rocks, some jutting out of the water, while others are partially submerged. In the distance, a few small buildings can be seen along the shoreline, adding a sense of human presence to the otherwise untouched wilderness. The print offers a glimpse into the rich heritage of Russian exploration and the vast, untamed beauty of the Siberian and Far Eastern frontier during the 19th century. The intricate details and use of contrast in this lithograph make it a stunning addition to any collection of historical or artistic works.
