Lampas silk cushion cover, early 1600s. Creator: Unknown

Lampas silk cushion cover, early 1600s. This rare example of a cushion cover in brocaded silk, rather than the stronger, more wear-resistant velvet, was made during the height of silk weaving for the Ottoman court. Also unusual are the bold silhouetted motifs in gilt-metal thread on a lustrous crimson silk ground. Multipetaled blossoms enliven the central scalloped medallion, and large tulips-- a signature Turkish flower--adorn the corner spandrels

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Lampas silk cushion cover from the early 1600s, created by an unknown artist. Unlike most cushion covers of that time, which were made with durable velvet, this rare piece features exquisite brocaded silk. It was crafted during the pinnacle of silk weaving for the Ottoman court, highlighting its historical significance. What sets this particular cushion cover apart are its striking motifs in gilt-metal thread against a lustrous crimson silk background. The bold silhouettes and intricate designs add an element of grandeur to this already luxurious textile. The central scalloped medallion is brought to life with vibrant multipetaled blossoms, while large tulips - a beloved symbol in Turkish culture - adorn the corner spandrels. Displayed proudly at the Cleveland Museum of Art, this lampas silk cushion cover represents Turkey's rich artistic heritage. Its origins can be traced back to either Istanbul or Bursa, two cities renowned for their contributions to textile artistry. Heritage Art/Heritage Images has beautifully captured every detail and nuance of this remarkable piece through their expert photography skills. This print allows us to appreciate not only the craftsmanship but also the cultural significance embedded within each stitch and motif. A true testament to human creativity throughout history!
