EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a moment from the annual religious celebration in honor of the dokshits idols at the Gusinoozersk datsan in the late 19th century. The image showcases a group of Lamas, dressed in intricately designed masks and costumes, engaged in the traditional Tsam dance. The central figure, the white-haired old man wearing a grandiose headdress, is identified as Tsagan-Ubyugun, representing Khashin Khan. The Tsam dance is an essential aspect of Buriat Buddhism, a religious and cultural tradition predominant among the indigenous people of the region. The photograph is part of an album of images documenting the city of Irkutsk and its surroundings during this period. Irkutsk, then the center of Siberian cultural and intellectual life, is depicted through various structures such as the Museum of Regional Studies, a technical school, an orphanage, hotels, and the Church of Our Lady of Kazan. The album also includes photographs of the suburb of Glazkovo and villages in the Irkutsk region, including those nestled on the shores of Lake Baikal. The Buriat people, who practice Buddhism, are well-represented in the album through various photographs and three prints of drawings showcasing the natural beauty of the region. The album offers a unique glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Siberia during the late 19th century, providing valuable insights into the lives of the people and their traditions.
