Kyrgyz-Kazakhs of the Middle Horde Paying a Tax by the Tsar's Decree, 19th century. Creator: Nikolay Nikolaevich Karazin

Kyrgyz-Kazakhs of the Middle Horde Paying a Tax by the Tsar's Decree, 19th century. One of 21 watercolors (out of an original 27) from an album relating to the history of the Siberian Cossacks held by the Rare Books Department of the Russian State Library in Moscow. The album was created as a gift for the future Tsar Nicholas II (1868-1918, reigned 1895-1917), Most August Ataman of All Cossack Voiskos (Commander of all Cossack troops, a title bestowed by Nicholas I), and presented to him in the summer of 1891 on his return to Saint Petersburg through Siberia from a trip to the Russian Far East. The theme of the album is Cossack history east of the Ural Mountains, beginning with the victory of the Cossack hetman (or ataman) Ermak Timofeevich (died 1585) over Khan Kuchum in 1582 and continuing with subjects from more than three centuries of Russian history

EDITORS COMMENTS
This watercolor painting, titled "Kyrgyz-Kazakhs of the Middle Horde Paying a Tax by the Tsar's Decree," is a striking work by the Russian artist Nikolay Nikolaevich Karazin, created in the late 19th century. The painting is one of 21 watercolors from an album chronicling the history of the Siberian Cossacks, a gift to Tsar Nicholas II in 1891 during his journey from the Russian Far East back to Saint Petersburg. The scene portrays a group of Kyrgyz-Kazakh men, dressed in traditional clothing, gathered around a table, paying their taxes as decreed by the Tsar. The men, seated or standing, are shown in various stages of the taxation process, some counting out coins, others signing documents, and still others handing over their livestock or other goods. In the background, horses and other animals graze in the open grasslands, emphasizing the connection between these people and their nomadic lifestyle. The painting offers a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the indigenous peoples of Central Asia, who were integral to the history of the Russian Empire. The meeting of frontiers between Russian and indigenous cultures is a recurring theme in the album, reflecting the complex and evolving relationships between these groups. The intricate details of the painting, from the textured fabrics and intricate patterns on the men's clothing to the lifelike depiction of the animals, showcase Karazin's exceptional artistic skill. The use of watercolor adds a sense of movement and vibrancy to the scene, capturing the spirit of the people and the vast, open landscape of Siberia. This painting is a valuable historical document, offering insights into the social and economic realities of life on the Russian frontier during the 19th century. It is a testament to the enduring legacy of the Cossack history and the diverse cultural heritage of the Russian Empire.
