Kirgiz Wrestling: Views in the Zaisan District, 1909. This image is from Vidy territorii Sibirskogo kazach'ego voiska (Views of the territory of the Siberian Cossack Host), one of three albums depicting the territories, culture, and way of life of the Cossacks living in the steppe regions of western Siberia and present-day Kazakhstan. These albums were created for and exhibited at the First West Siberian Agricultural, Forestry, and Commercial-Industrial Exhibition in Omsk in 1911. The albums were part of a collection of photographs assembled between 1891 and 1918 by the museum of the West Siberian Branch of the Imperial Russian Geographic Society in Omsk. The photographs in the albums were taken in 1909 by N.G. Katanaev (son of Colonel G.E. Katanaev), during a journey to Cossack settlements in Stepnoi krai (later the oblasts of Ural'sk, Turgai, Akmola, and Semipalatinsk). Omsk State Museum of Regional History and Folklife

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "Kirgiz Wrestling: Views in the Zaisan District, 1909," is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Cossacks living in the steppe regions of western Siberia and present-day Kazakhstan. Taken by Nikolai Georgievich Katanaev during his journey to Cossack settlements in Stepnoi krai, this image is part of the three albums depicting the territories, culture, and way of life of the Cossacks. The albums were created for and exhibited at the First West Siberian Agricultural, Forestry, and Commercial-Industrial Exhibition in Omsk in 1911. The photograph showcases an intense moment of Kirgiz wrestling, a traditional sport that was popular among the nomadic Kirgiz people. The wrestlers, dressed in traditional clothing, are locked in a fierce struggle, their muscles tensed and faces contorted with effort. The crowd of onlookers, mostly men, watch intently, some with expressions of excitement and others with concern. The scene is set against a backdrop of the vast, open steppe, with its undulating hills and endless expanse of grasslands. The photograph is a valuable historical record of the Kirgiz people and their traditions, providing insight into their way of life over a century ago. The image is part of a collection of photographs assembled between 1891 and 1918 by the museum of the West Siberian Branch of the Imperial Russian Geographic Society in Omsk. It is a reminder of the rich cultural diversity that existed in western Siberia and Kazakhstan during this period and the importance of preserving and celebrating these traditions for future generations.
