King Edward's School, Bury St. Edmund's, 1850. Creator: Unknown
King Edward's School, Bury St. Edmund's, [in Suffolk], 1850. This very interesting festival, in commemoration of King Edward's School, founded at Bury St. Edmmd's in 1550, was held on Friday week, and was most numerously attended...It was a good thought...that the year which completed the third century of its existence should not be suffered to pass unmarked by some appropriate celebration - some recognition of the debt which the scholars and the inhabitants of the town alike owed to the institution of the Protestant King'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken from the pages of the Illustrated London News in 1850, showcases King Edward's School in Bury St. Edmund's, Suffolk, England, during a festive occasion marking the school's tercentenary. The event, held on a Friday in 1850, attracted a large attendance of scholars and townspeople, who came together to commemorate the 300-year existence of the esteemed educational institution. The school, founded in 1550 during the reign of King Edward VI of England, has played a significant role in the history of Bury St. Edmund's. The anniversary celebration was an opportunity for the community to reflect on the institution's rich heritage and the debt owed to King Edward VI for its establishment. The school's Protestant foundation was a testament to the religious and educational climate of the time. The photograph, an engraving from the Illustrated London News, captures the exterior of the school building, with its grand architecture and intricate details. The black-and-white image transports us back to the Victorian era, offering a glimpse into the past and the importance placed on education during that time. The event, as reported in the newspaper, was a fitting tribute to the school's storied history and the enduring impact it has had on the town of Bury St. Edmund's and its people.
