EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the regal presence of King Clovis I and Queen Clotilde of the Franks, dating back to the late 5th - early 6th century. Painted by Frederic Lix in the late 19th century, this artwork showcases the historical significance of these influential figures. Clovis I, a powerful Frankish king who reigned from c. 466-511 AD, is renowned for his conversion to Christianity. It was his wife, Clotilde, a Burgundian princess, who played a pivotal role in persuading him to embrace this faith. This momentous event took place at Rheims in 496 AD and marked Clovis as not only the first Christian King of the Franks but also as someone who successfully united various Frankish tribes into one kingdom. The portrait depicts both monarchs adorned in their royal attire: Clovis wearing a crown and holding a scepter while Clotilde stands beside him elegantly dressed. The image exudes power and authority befitting their status as rulers. Frederic Lix's engraving beautifully captures this significant historical union between husband and wife; it symbolizes not only their marriage but also their shared commitment to Christianity that shaped medieval Europe's destiny. Preserved through time, this print serves as an important reminder of France's rich history and its transformation under King Clovis I's reign alongside Queen Clotilde's influence.
