Julia Jackson Duckworth (1846-1895), 1874. Creator: Julia Margaret Cameron (British, 1815-1879)

Julia Jackson Duckworth (1846-1895), 1874. One of the renowned beauties of Victorian England, Jackson is seen in the two photographs to the left the year she married barrister Herbert Duckworth at age 21. He died three years later, leaving her with two children and a third on the way. She is seen here at age 28, a Victorian tragic heroine haunted by grief. Pale and hollow-eyed, although still lovely, she stands before a wall of ivy, an evergreen plant that signified eternity and fidelity. Four years later, Duckworth married biographer Sir Leslie Stephen with whom she had four children, including author Virginia Woolf and painter Vanessa Bell. Julia Jackson Duckworth Stephen died of rheumatic fever in 1895 at age 49

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the enigmatic beauty of Julia Jackson Duckworth, a renowned figure in Victorian England. Taken by the talented photographer Julia Margaret Cameron in 1874, these two photographs depict Julia at age 28, just one year after her marriage to barrister Herbert Duckworth and three years after his untimely death. In this image, we see a hauntingly pale and hollow-eyed Julia standing before a wall of ivy, symbolizing eternity and fidelity. The ivy serves as a poignant backdrop for this Victorian tragic heroine who was plagued by grief throughout her life. Despite her sorrow, she remains undeniably lovely. Julia's story took another turn when she married biographer Sir Leslie Stephen four years later. Together they had four children, including the famous author Virginia Woolf and painter Vanessa Bell. However, tragedy struck once again when Julia succumbed to rheumatic fever at the young age of 49 in 1895. This albumen print from a wet collodion negative showcases Cameron's exceptional talent as an artist capturing not only physical beauty but also the emotional depth within her subjects. Preserved by The Cleveland Museum of Art, this photograph is a testament to both Cameron's skill behind the lens and Julia Jackson Duckworth's enduring legacy as an influential figure in British history.
