EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a comical scene from the late 18th century, brought to life by the talented artist Randolph Caldecott. Titled "John Gilpin's friend lends him a wig and a hat" this image is based on William Cowper's famous comic ballad, "The Diverting History of John Gilpin". In this whimsical tale, we find ourselves in rural England as John Gilpin, a draper by profession, embarks on an eventful journey to Edmonton. However, fate has other plans for our protagonist as he loses control of his horse along the way. As depicted in Caldecott's artwork, John finds himself separated from his wife and children and ends up in Ware instead. It is at this point that his mischievous friend comes to the rescue with a wig and hat - perhaps an attempt to disguise poor John or simply add more hilarity to his predicament. Caldecott skillfully portrays the humor of the situation through intricate details such as John's bewildered expression and exaggerated body language. The monochrome palette adds depth and character to every element within the frame – from John's breeches and waistcoat to his friend's mischievous grin. This delightful print not only showcases Caldecott's artistic prowess but also pays homage to Cowper's enduring literary creation. It serves as a reminder of how timeless tales can be immortalized through artistry across different centuries.
