John Gilpin sets out on his journey to Edmonton, 1878, (c1918). John Gilpin was the subject of a comic ballad of 1782 by William Cowper entitled " The Diverting History of John Gilpin". The ballad, based on real-life character, describes how, on a journey to Edmonton (north in London), Gilpin, a draper, became separated from his wife and children after losing control of his horse, and ended up in the town of Ware, ten miles away from his intended destination. From " The Diverting History of John Gilpin", by William Cowper. [Frederick Warne and Co. London & New York, c1918]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "John Gilpin sets out on his journey to Edmonton, 1878" by Randolph Caldecott, takes us back to the charm of the 18th century. Inspired by William Cowper's comic ballad "The Diverting History of John Gilpin" this image captures a pivotal moment in the story. In this scene, we see John Gilpin, a draper from London, embarking on his ill-fated journey to Edmonton. Dressed in traditional eighteenth-century attire and donning a cape that billows behind him as he rides his horse along an avenue lined with trees, Gilpin exudes determination mixed with a hint of trepidation. Caldecott's skillful use of monochrome adds depth and character to the image. The contrast between light and shadow creates an atmosphere filled with anticipation and adventure. As we gaze at this print, we can almost hear the sound of hooves clattering against the cobblestone road. Gilpin's misfortune is palpable in every detail captured by Caldecott's brushstroke. We can imagine how calamity struck when he lost control of his horse during the journey, leading him astray into Ware instead of reaching Edmonton as planned. This photograph not only showcases Caldecott's artistic prowess but also pays homage to British humor and storytelling traditions. It serves as a reminder that even in moments of mishap or unexpected detours in life’s journeys – there is often laughter found amidst adversity.
