EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the enigmatic figure of James Butler, captured by the skilled hand of Hans Holbein the Younger. Dating back to 1537, this portrait was once mistakenly identified as Thomas Boleyn, Earl of Wiltshire, but further research has revealed its true subject. James Butler, known as the 9th Earl of Ormond and 2nd Earl of Ossory, was born in 1496 to Piers Butler and Margaret Fitzgerald. His life came to a tragic end in London under mysterious circumstances involving poisoning. The details surrounding his untimely demise remain shrouded in uncertainty. Holbein's masterful use of black chalk brings out every intricate detail on James Butler's face and attire. The bearded aristocrat gazes away from the viewer with an air of quiet contemplation while donning a stylish hat and elaborate clothing typical of Renaissance fashion. Part of the esteemed Royal Collection Trust housed at Windsor Castle, this drawing offers us a glimpse into both British history and artistry. Published in K. T. Parker's "The Drawings of Holbein at Windsor Castle" (1945), it is a testament to Holbein's talent for capturing not only physical likeness but also conveying inner depth through his line work. As we admire this striking monochrome image from the forties era, we are reminded that even centuries later, historical mysteries continue to intrigue us with their unanswered questions about figures like James Butler - an influential nobleman whose legacy remains etched within these delicate lines.
