EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white portrait captures the dignified presence of James Atlay, the esteemed Bishop of Hereford in 1878. The artist duo Lock & Whitfield skillfully bring out the depth and character of this influential figure from the 19th century. James Atlay's journey to becoming a bishop was marked by his dedication and hard work. Previously serving as the vicar of Leeds, he took on his role as Bishop of Hereford in 1868 with great enthusiasm. Known for his popularity among both clergy and laity, Atlay made it a point to officiate in every church within his vast but sparsely populated diocese. In this monochrome print, we see a man who exudes wisdom and authority. His sideburns frame a face that reflects years of experience and devotion to his faith. As a doctor of divinity, Atlay possessed immense knowledge about Christianity which he used to guide his flock.
