The International Exhibition: "The Grapplers", group in bronzed zinc... 1862. Creator: Unknown. The International Exhibition: "The Grapplers", group in bronzed zinc... 1862. Creator: Unknown

The International Exhibition: "The Grapplers", group in bronzed zinc, modelled by J.P. Molin, 1862. There is the true old fiery Norse spirit in the grim duel of these two men, relentlessly belted together, to be separated only by death...Each has made a thrust at the other, each has seized his adversary's wrist...the chances may seem for a moment almost evenly balanced, as they sway backwards and forwards with every muscle rigid as stone, and every vein distended to bursting; but it is impossible to doubt which will ultimately be the victor. The older one is not only the more muscular...but he is the more collected and more firmly planted of the two: there is a murderous concentrated determination and bulldog tenacity of purpose about the whole man; he might easily throw the other, but his chief advantage is seen in the way in which he keeps his adversary's blade at arm's length, which the younger and doomed man has failed to do...It is such points of truthful observation and anatomical knowledge as these which not only tell the story but render this work so technically admirable'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

The International Exhibition - The Grapplers, group in bronzed zinc..., 1862,

EDITORS COMMENTS
is an intriguing and captivating photograph that showcases the intensity and raw power of a Norse-like wrestling match. The creators of this work, unknown to us, have masterfully captured the moment of a fierce duel between two men, their bodies locked in a deadly embrace. The image, modelled by J.P. Molin in 1862, portrays two men in a brutal struggle, each attempting to outmaneuver the other. The older man, with his bulging muscles and determined expression, exudes an air of unyielding strength and tenacity. His opponent, though younger, seems to be faltering, his blade no longer at arm's length. The caption from the Illustrated London News of 1862 beautifully describes the scene, highlighting the Old Norse spirit that permeates the image. The author notes the evenly balanced chances of the two wrestlers, but ultimately, the older man's superior strength and unwavering determination make him the likely victor. This photograph is not only a testament to the physical prowess of the wrestlers but also to the keen observation and anatomical knowledge of the creators. Their ability to capture the intricacies of the wrestling match, from the way the men's muscles ripple with exertion to the subtle shifts in their balance, adds to the work's technical admirability. The International Exhibition: The Grapplers, group in bronzed zinc..., 1862, is a powerful and evocative image that transports us to a time and place where strength, determination, and the spirit of competition reigned supreme. The mystery surrounding its creators only adds to its allure, making it a true masterpiece of the photographic art.
