The International Exhibition - Sterne's "Maria", by Andrea Appiani Jun. of Milan, 1862. Creator: W Thomas. The International Exhibition - Sterne's "Maria", by Andrea Appiani Jun. of Milan, 1862. Creator: W Thomas

The International Exhibition - Sterne's "Maria", by Andrea Appiani Jun. of Milan, 1862. Engraving of a painting. The "Maria" of the "Tristram Shandy" and the "Sentimental Journey" is one of the most touching and beautiful of all Sterne's felicitious delineations, and the poor heartbroken, crazed village maiden is so admirably realised by Signor Appiani...The painter has represented...Maria...sitting under a poplar. "She was sitting with her elbow in her lap, and her head leaning on one side within her hand; a small brook ran at the foot of the tree. She was dressed in white, and much as my friend (Mr. Shandy) described her, except that her hair hung loose, which before was twisted with a silken net...Her goat had been as faithless as her lover; and she had got a little dog in lieu of him, which she kept tied by a string to her girdle. As I looked at her dog, she drew him towards her with the string. Thou shalt not leave me, Sylvio, said she". The position of this picture, which had already made a reputation, and indeed the general carelessness, if not partiality, shown in the hanging of all the Italian pictures, is a disgrace to the Fine-Art Commissioners for Italy'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The International Exhibition - Sterne's 'Maria'" by Andrea Appiani Jun., of Milan, in 1862. Created by W Thomas, this engraving beautifully captures the essence of Signor Appiani's portrayal of Maria from Laurence Sterne's novels "Tristram Shandy" and "Sentimental Journey". In this poignant depiction, Maria is seated beneath a majestic poplar tree with her elbow resting on her lap and her head gently leaning against one hand. A serene brook flows at the foot of the tree, adding to the tranquility of the scene. Dressed in white attire that closely resembles Mr. Shandy's description, Maria appears heartbroken and distraught after being abandoned by both her lover and her faithful goat. However, amidst her sorrowful state, she finds solace in a little dog tied to her girdle with a string. As depicted in the painting, Maria lovingly pulls him closer while uttering tender words: "'Thou shalt not leave me Sylvio,' said she." This moment encapsulates both Maria's vulnerability and resilience as she seeks companionship even after experiencing betrayal. "The International Exhibition - Sterne's 'Maria'" had already gained significant acclaim prior to its display at this exhibition. However, it is lamentable that such an exceptional artwork was poorly positioned within the gallery alongside other Italian paintings. The lackadaisical approach taken by the Fine-Art Commissioners for Italy reflects their disregard for showcasing these masterpieces appropriately. W Thomas skillfully captured every intricate detail through his engraving technique, allowing viewers to appreciate Signor Appiani's remarkable realization of Maria’s character. This print serves as a testament to both artistic mastery and emotional storytelling found within Andrea Appiani Jun.'s work during this era.
