The International Exhibition: group of Wedgwood and majolica ware, by Wedgwood and Co. 1862. The artist who has produced them, Mr. Lessore, is undoubtedly a man of talent and genius...In the centre of the group is a large platter or dish on which is depicted Europa sitting on the bull's back...Immediately to the left of this is a large vase of an elongated form...In the upper portion of the vase an orange-yellow prevails, and the oakleaves at the base are in a sage-green...Immediately to the right of the large platter is an interesting vase mounted on a stand, bearing a classic subject, in which a chariot is introduced, drawn by spirited steeds...The vase on the extreme right of the group presents to us a good sketch of "first steps." The little central vase has a cream ground and a turquoise line round the subject, and, like the little three-handled vase, is of a pleasing character. The other vases - that bearing the snowdrops and that to the extreme left of the group - are in what is commonly known as Wedgwood ware, the ground being a rich dead purple-blue and the ornament wrought upon them in relief white forms'. This photograph showcases a collection of exquisite Wedgwood and majolica wares, created by the renowned Wedgwood and Co. in 1862. The artist responsible for these masterpieces, Mr. Lessore, is acknowledged as a man of exceptional talent and genius. At the heart of the grouping is a grand platter or dish, featuring Europa riding on the back of a bull. To its left stands a large, elongated vase, with an orange-yellow hue dominating the upper portion and sage-green oakleaves adorning the base. To the right of the platter lies an intriguing vase atop a stand, displaying a classic subject: a chariot drawn by spirited steeds. The vase on the far right of the grouping presents a delightful sketch of early Wedgwood and majolica experimentation. The central vase boasts a cream ground and a turquoise border, while the ornamentation is rendered in relief white forms. The other vases, including those bearing snowdrops and the one to the extreme left, are representative of the Wedgwood ware, characterized by a rich dead purple-blue ground and white ornamentation in relief. This photograph offers a glimpse into the artistic prowess of Wedgwood and Co. during the mid-19th century, showcasing their ability to blend traditional techniques with innovative designs. The result is a stunning collection of ceramics that continues to captivate viewers to this day.
