The International Exhibition: "Fetching the Old Mare Home" by F. W. Keyl, 1862. Creator: W Thomas. The International Exhibition: "Fetching the Old Mare Home" by F. W. Keyl, 1862. Creator: W Thomas

The International Exhibition: "Fetching the Old Mare Home" by F. W. Keyl, 1862. Engraving of a painting. This carefully and powerfully painted picture tells its simple story well. We see that the faithful old animal has had a holiday (whether on its birthday or not we cannot say), during which it has had full scope to follow its own devices on the wide, uninclosed, heathy common. Many a time, no doubt, has it trotted about in vague recollection of youthful friskings and gambols; often has it rolled over and over on its back after the insane manner of the equine race. The time has arrived, however, for Mrs. Dobbin to return to the prosaic world, and her more useful, though less agreeable, life in harness. So the peasant farmer's daughter, aided by her little sister, and a sieve of com, is sent to inveigle the old lass from the companion who still looks dejectedly after her over the distant brow of the hill. She is still a little resentful at her loss of liberty, and it is quite as much as our pretty, sunburnt, barefooted damsel can do to restrain her trotting along too briskly by tugging at her ragged ear. The windiness of the open common is well expressed in the streaming mane of the mare and the flying skirts of the young woman and child'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

Fetching the Old Mare Home

EDITORS COMMENTS
by F.W. Keyl, an 1862 painting engraved by W. Thomas, captures a heartwarming moment of rural life. In this scene, a faithful old mare, having enjoyed a day of freedom on the open heath, is being led back home by her young owner, a peasant farmer's daughter, and her little sister. The mare, still longing for her liberty, resists being led away, her dejected companion looking on from a distance. The painting beautifully conveys the mare's sense of nostalgia for her youthful days of frolicking on the common. Her mane streams in the wind, mirroring the openness and freedom of the landscape. The young woman and child, dressed in sunburnt, barefoot attire, are determined to bring the old mare back to her duties in harness. The contrast between the open, carefree expanse of the common and the prosaic world of domestic life is vividly portrayed. The simple story told in this painting resonates with the viewer, evoking feelings of nostalgia, warmth, and the passage of time. The careful attention to detail, from the textures of the mare's mane to the folds of the young woman's skirt, adds depth and richness to the image. Overall, "Fetching the Old Mare Home" is a poignant and evocative depiction of rural life and the bond between humans and their animals.
