Initial M[issus est] Excised from an Antiphonary: The Annunciation, 1430-1438. Creator
Initial M[issus est] Excised from an Antiphonary: The Annunciation, 1430-1438. This masterful initial M, colourful and crowded with playful animals and fantastic forms, recalls the announcement to the Virgin Mary by the Angel Gabriel that she will conceive and bear a son: Missus est Gabriel Angelus ad Miriam Virginem.... (The Angel Gabriel was sent to Mary....), the response for the first Sunday in Advent. The decorated initial is related in style to a set of choir books made by Belbello for the Church of Saints Giovanni e Paolo in Venice. Belbellos style has been associated with another artist, the Master of the Murano Gradual, with whom he possibly collaborated in Venice. Belbellos career placed him in Milan, Mantua, Pavia, and Venice. His services were highly sought after by Renaissance princes, and his style was influential and widespread in northern Italy

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite "Initial M[issus est] Excised from an Antiphonary: The Annunciation" created between 1430-1438. The initial M, skillfully crafted with vibrant colors and a delightful array of playful animals and fantastical forms, transports us to the moment when the Angel Gabriel announced to the Virgin Mary that she would conceive and bear a son. This announcement is beautifully depicted in Latin as "Missus est Gabriel Angelus ad Miriam Virginem. . . " (The Angel Gabriel was sent to Mary. . . . ), which serves as the response for the first Sunday in Advent. The style of this decorated initial is reminiscent of a set of choir books made by Belbello for the Church of Saints Giovanni e Paolo in Venice. Belbello's artistic flair has been linked to another renowned artist, known as the Master of Murano Gradual, suggesting a possible collaboration between them in Venice. Throughout his illustrious career, Belbello left his mark in Milan, Mantua, Pavia, and Venice, attracting patronage from Renaissance princes who sought after his exceptional talent. This remarkable piece not only exemplifies Belbello's influence on northern Italian art but also highlights its significance during the 15th century. Crafted meticulously on vellum using ink and tempera with touches of gold detailing, this manuscript represents both heritage art and Stefano da Verona's mastery. Preserved at The Cleveland Museum of Art under Heritage Images' care, this print allows us to appreciate its beauty while immersing ourselves in Italy's rich artistic legacy.
