EDITORS COMMENTS
The Incredulity of Saint Thomas," a masterpiece by the renowned Baroque artist Guercino, depicts an intriguing moment from the New Testament as recorded in the Acts of the Apostles (20:24-29). In this painting, Guercino captures the essence of doubt and faith as embodied in the figure of Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ. Thomas, known as "Doubting Thomas," was not present when Jesus appeared to the disciples following His Resurrection. When informed of this miraculous event, Thomas famously declared, "Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will not believe" (John 20:25). Eight days later, Jesus appeared again to the disciples, and Thomas was given the opportunity to fulfill his request. He touched Jesus' wounds and exclaimed, "My Lord and my God!" (John 20:28). Guercino's painting captures the pivotal moment when Thomas encounters the risen Christ. Thomas is shown with a look of incredulity and awe, as he reaches out to touch the wounds in Jesus' hands and side. The other apostles, gathered around the scene, look on with a mixture of wonder and approval. The use of chiaroscuro, or strong contrasts between light and dark, adds depth and drama to the painting, while the delicate brushwork and rich colors showcase Guercino's exceptional skill as a painter. This oil on canvas work, created around 1621, is a testament to the enduring power of faith and the human capacity for doubt. It is a must-see masterpiece, now housed in the prestigious Musei Vaticani in Viale Vaticano, Rome. The Incredulity of Saint Thomas is a shining example of the Bolognese School's contribution to the history of Christian art and the New Testament narrative.
