Illuminated Folio from a Gulistan (Rose Garden) of Sadi (c. 1213-1291), c. 1475-1500, borders added c. 1550. The Gulistan, completed around 1258, is one of the most celebrated works of Persian literature. The books name means " rose garden" in Persian; just as a rose garden is a collection of flowers, the contents are a collection of anecdotes. Written in both prose and verse, the Gulistan was used for centuries as a primer for schoolchildren in greater Iran, India, and Turkey. The text on these pages is written in nastaliq script and comes from the first chapter, " On the Conduct of Kings." The exquisite borders of these two folios show lions, dragons, foxes, and peacocks in a lush landscape, painted in gold and silver that has tarnished over time

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an illuminated folio from a Gulistan (Rose Garden) of Sadi, dating back to the late 15th century. The Gulistan, a renowned Persian literary masterpiece completed in 1258, is celebrated for its collection of anecdotes and teachings. It served as a fundamental primer for schoolchildren across Iran, India, and Turkey for centuries. The pages featured in this print are adorned with exquisite borders added around 1550. These intricate designs depict majestic lions, mythical dragons, cunning foxes, and vibrant peacocks set against a lush landscape. Painted in gold and silver that has gracefully tarnished over time, these borders add an extra layer of opulence to the already mesmerizing manuscript. Written in nastaliq script on these pages is an excerpt from the first chapter titled "On the Conduct of Kings". This particular section emphasizes wisdom and guidance for rulers during the Safavid period. Crafted by Sultan Ali Mashhadi or Sultan Muhammad—both esteemed Iranian artists—the delicate strokes of opaque watercolor bring life to every detail within this piece. Hailing from Tabriz during the golden age of Persian artistry between 1430-1520 or 1501-1722 respectively, this artwork represents the pinnacle of artistic expression during that era. Preserved at The Cleveland Museum of Art today under Heritage Art/Heritage Images' care, this print allows us to appreciate not only its historical significance but also marvel at its enduring beauty.
