Ice Flowers on Newly Formed Sea Ice, 1912, (1913). Artist: Frank Debenham

Ice Flowers on Newly Formed Sea Ice, 1912, (1913). Ice crystals formed on a sheet of ice over water, with 18 inch rule for scale. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume II. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Ice Flowers on Newly Formed Sea Ice, 1912" by Frank Debenham takes us back to the final expedition of Captain Robert Falcon Scott in the early 20th century. The image showcases delicate ice crystals formed on a sheet of ice over water, with an 18-inch rule placed nearby for scale. The Terra Nova Expedition, also known as the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), was a remarkable scientific endeavor led by Scott. Comprising a diverse team of experts including geologists, zoologists, surgeons, photographers, and more, they aimed to continue their research in Antarctica while also striving to be the first humans to reach the South Pole. Unfortunately, upon reaching their long-awaited destination on January 17th, 1912, Scott and his companions discovered that Roald Amundsen's Norwegian expedition had beaten them there by a month. Tragically delayed by blizzards and facing dwindling supplies during their return journey, Scott and his remaining team members perished at the end of March. It wasn't until eight months later that their bodies and diaries were found. This poignant photograph is part of "Scott's Last Expedition". Volume II published in London in 1913. It serves as a haunting reminder of the bravery and sacrifice exhibited by these explorers who pushed themselves to unimaginable limits in pursuit of knowledge and adventure amidst harsh Antarctic conditions.
