Hutchinsons Market, Aldgate, 1845. Creator: Unknown

Hutchinsons Market, Aldgate, 1845. Newly built covered market in London:a commodious marketplace, a respectable tavern, and between 40 and 50 dwelling-houses. The market is intended for the convenience of the Jewish population of the district, who consume a considerable quantity of fish...The Market, Tavern, and houses have been erected from the designs of Mr. Arthur Ashpitel, of Old Broad-street, within twelve months...Part of the site was formerly occupied by meanly-built premises, in a sad state of dilapidation, and partly by two old mansions, which had been for many years untenanted. The property was intersected by a narrow alley, much infested by persons of bad character; and the entire locality bore that aspect of squalid poverty.... EDITORS COMMENTS

This print takes us back to the bustling streets of Aldgate in 1845. The focal point is Hutchinsons Market, a newly built covered market that served as a hub for the Jewish population in the area. Designed by Mr. Arthur Ashpitel, this commodious marketplace offered convenience to its patrons who had an insatiable appetite for fish. Surrounding the market are around 40 to 50 dwelling-houses, providing homes for those living in this vibrant district. The transformation of this site is remarkable, as it was once occupied by dilapidated buildings and abandoned mansions. A narrow alley infested with unsavory characters further added to the squalid poverty that plagued this locality. The print captures not only the architectural beauty of Hutchinsons Market but also gives us a glimpse into daily life during Victorian times. People can be seen going about their business on the street outside, creating a lively street scene typical of 19th-century London. This engraving originally appeared in "Illustrated London News" and offers us a window into history, showcasing how markets played an essential role in serving communities and bringing people together even centuries ago. It stands as a testament to both British architecture and trade practices during that era. As we admire this historical artifact captured by an unknown creator, we are reminded of how much our cities have evolved while still cherishing their rich heritage.
