Hormuzd Rassam, explorer and archaeologist, 1881. Rassam (1826-1910) was born in Mosul, in modern Iraq. In 1845-1847 he assisted the British archaeologist AH Layard in his first expedition to the ancient Assyrian city of Nineveh. Rassam then studied at Oxford before being sent by the trustees of the British Museum to assist Layard on his second Assyrian expedition of 1849-1851. He subsequently continued work on various Assyrian sites, making numerous important discoveries. From Men of Mark: a gallery of contemporary portraits of men distinguished in the Senate, the Church, in science, literature and art, the army, navy, law, medicine, etc. Photographed from life by Lock and Whitfield, with brief biographical notices by Thompson Cooper. This print captures Hormuzd Rassam, a renowned explorer and archaeologist, in 1881. Born in Mosul, modern-day Iraq, Rassam's passion for uncovering ancient civilizations led him on remarkable expeditions throughout his career. In the mid-19th century, Rassam played a crucial role as an assistant to British archaeologist AH Layard during his first expedition to the ancient Assyrian city of Nineveh. Impressed by his skills and dedication, the trustees of the British Museum sent Rassam to assist Layard once again on his second Assyrian expedition from 1849 to 1851. Following these expeditions, Rassam continued working tirelessly on various Assyrian sites where he made numerous significant discoveries that shed light on this ancient civilization.
