EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a powerful moment in naval history. The HMS Duke of Wellington, a magnificent 131-gun first-rate ship of the line, is depicted firing a resounding Royal Salute as the flagship at Portsmouth, Hampshire in 1896. With its towering masts and billowing sails, this Victorian warship showcases both sail and steam power. Originally intended to be named Windsor Castle, fate intervened when news broke that the legendary Duke of Wellington had passed away on the very day she was launched. As a tribute to his memory, she was renamed HMS Duke of Wellington. In 1869, she took over from the iconic HMS Victory as the flagship for the Port Admiral of Portsmouth. The image portrays an awe-inspiring sight with flags fluttering proudly against a backdrop of sea and sky. It evokes feelings of admiration for Britain's naval might during this era. The monochrome aesthetic adds a timeless quality to this historical snapshot. Symonds & Co skillfully captured this momentous occasion in their print featured in The Navy and Army Illustrated magazine in April 1896. This artwork serves as a reminder not only of England's maritime heritage but also pays homage to one of its greatest military leaders - the indomitable Duke of Wellington.
