HMS Calliope, Royal Navy 3rd class cruiser, c1890-c1893
HMS Calliope, Royal Navy 3rd class cruiser, c1890-c1893. A Calypso class cruiser, HMS Calliope entered service in 1887. In 1889 she survived an encounter with a tropical cyclone at Apia, Samoa, that wrecked or sank all twelve other ships present at the time. Calliope was placed in reserve in 1889 and, after a short period as a training ship, in 1907 became a drill ship for the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve on the Tyne at Newecastle, a role she would perform until 1951. A print from Her Majestys Navy Including its Deeds and Battles, by Lieut Chas Rathbone Low, Volume I, JS Virtue & Co, London, 1890-1893

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the majestic HMS Calliope, a 3rd class cruiser of the Royal Navy during the late 19th century. Built in 1887 as part of the Calypso class, this formidable warship played a significant role in naval history. In 1889, she braved a devastating tropical cyclone at Apia, Samoa, emerging as the sole survivor among twelve other ships present at that time. After being placed in reserve and serving briefly as a training ship, HMS Calliope found her new purpose in 1907 as a drill ship for the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve on the Tyne at Newcastle. Remarkably, she faithfully fulfilled this duty until an impressive span of over four decades before retiring from service in 1951. The chromolithograph print beautifully captures this iconic vessel against a picturesque seascape backdrop. The white ensign flag proudly flutters atop her mast while her distinctive funnel stands tall against the horizon. This image not only represents Britain's naval power but also symbolizes resilience and triumph amidst adversity. Preserved within "Her Majesty's Navy Including its Deeds and Battles". Volume I by Lieutenant Chas Rathbone Low, this historical artifact offers us glimpses into an era when sail and steam coexisted on these mighty warships. It serves as both a testament to maritime heritage and an enduring reminder of our nation's proud naval legacy.
