The harem windows in the court of a wealthy Cairenes house, Cairo, Egypt, 1905. Artist: Underwood & Underwood
The harem-windows in the court of a wealthy Cairenes house, Cairo, Egypt, 1905. The ground floor, the carved doorway to which you see here on the right behind the tree, is reserved for the men and is called the salamlik. There the master of the house receives his friends, who, according to Moslem politeness, must not give the slightest intimation that they are aware of the existence of any women in the house. If any of these friends are taken to the second floor they raise their voices and let it be known that they are coming, in order to warn the women and give them time to retire or to veil themselves; for the harem, the apartment of the women, is on the upper floor. There is rarely any higher floor in a Cairo house. Stereoscopic card. Detail. From a series called Egypt Through the Stereoscope, text by James H Breasted

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, taken in 1905 by Underwood & Underwood, transports us to the enchanting world of a wealthy Cairenes house in Cairo, Egypt. The image showcases the harem windows within the court of this magnificent residence. As we gaze upon it, we are transported back in time to witness the intricate social dynamics that governed these opulent households. The photograph reveals a two-story building with a beautifully carved doorway on the ground floor, known as the salamlik. This area is exclusively reserved for men and serves as a space where they gather and entertain their friends. It is here that they must adhere to Moslem politeness by not acknowledging or hinting at any knowledge of women's presence within the house. On the second floor lies the harem, an apartment dedicated solely to women. When male guests ascend to this level, they announce their arrival loudly so as to provide ample warning for women to retire or veil themselves accordingly. The composition also features a lush tree standing tall behind the intricately designed doorway on the right side of our view. Its branches gracefully frame this architectural marvel while adding an element of natural beauty and serenity. Through stereoscopic photography techniques employed by Underwood & Underwood, every detail comes alive before our eyes – from ancient Egyptian motifs adorning walls to delicate plants surrounding this grand structure. This remarkable snapshot offers us a glimpse into both historical architecture and societal norms prevalent during early 20th-century Cairo – truly capturing Egypt's rich cultural heritage through its lens.
