Group of Convicts, 1906-1911. Creator: Isaiah Aronovich Shinkman
Group of Convicts, 1906-1911. This photograph is from an album of 47 views of convicts and structures at the Akatuy Prison, one of the main centers where political prisoners were held in the Russian Empire during the late-tsarist period. The album belonged to Isaiah Aronovich Shinkman, a physician and member of the Socialist Revolutionary Party, who was incarcerated at Akatuy from 1906 to 1911. The prison was located at the Akatuy silver mine in Nerchinsk okrug (district) in the Transbaikal Territory of Siberia. Thousands of political prisoners were exiled to Siberia from European Russia and from Poland, Finland, Latvia, and Estonia (all then part of the Russian Empire) following the repression of the Russian Revolution of 1905. Criminal labor convicts and political prisoners had long been sent to Nerchinsk to work in extracting lead-silver ores in the region's mines. Irkutsk State University

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph, titled 'Group of Convicts' by Isaiah Aronovich Shinkman, captures a poignant moment at Akatuy Prison in the Transbaikal Territory of Russia, circa 1906-1911. The image is taken from an album belonging to Dr. Shinkman, a physician and Socialist Revolutionary Party member, who was imprisoned there during this period. Akatuy Prison, situated at the Akatuy silver mine in Nerchinsk okrug, was a major center for holding political prisoners following the repression of the Russian Revolution of 1905. Thousands of individuals from European Russia and territories such as Poland, Finland, Latvia, and Estonia were exiled to Siberia to work in the region's mines. In this image, a group of convicts are seen seated and standing outside, dressed in drab apparel. The women wear shawls and long coats, while the men don simple, dark clothing. The group appears somber, their gazes fixed on the camera or downcast. The prison buildings and structures can be seen in the background. This photograph offers a glimpse into the harsh realities of life in a Siberian prison during a pivotal moment in Russian history. Isaiah Aronovich Shinkman's album, now held at Irkutsk State University, provides a valuable historical record of this period. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of political repression and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
