The Great Hercules or Knollenman, 1589. Creator: Hendrick Goltzius (Dutch, 1558-1617)
The Great Hercules or Knollenman, 1589. Mannerism, a style that developed in Italy around 1520, can be considered both a continuation of and a reaction against the High Renaissance. While the art of the Italian master Raphael (1483-1520) exemplifies balanced compositions, ideal human proportions, credible perspective, and harmonious integration of the art of antiquity, Mannerist works distort realistic treatment of figures and space. Anatomy is exaggerated and space is illogical, creating an artificial elegance and sophistication. Mannerism soon spread throughout Europe, where it continued to be popular until the early 17th century. The most important northern Mannerist artist was Goltzius, whose style was based upon the exaggerated musculature of figures depicted by Michelangelo (1475-1564)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Great Hercules or Knollenman" by Hendrick Goltzius, a renowned Dutch artist from the 16th century. The artwork belongs to the Mannerism style, which emerged in Italy around 1520 as both a continuation of and reaction against the High Renaissance. While artists like Raphael aimed for balanced compositions and realistic depictions, Mannerist works intentionally distorted figures and space. Goltzius, influenced by Michelangelo's exaggerated musculature, became one of the most important northern Mannerist artists. In this engraving, he skillfully portrays Hercules with an emphasis on his powerful physique. The anatomy is exaggerated to create an artificial elegance and sophistication that characterizes Mannerism. As we delve into this piece, we are transported back in time to witness Goltzius' mastery unfold before our eyes. His attention to detail is evident in every stroke of his engraving tool. From Hercules' bulging muscles to the intricate patterns adorning his attire, each element adds depth and complexity to the composition. "The Great Hercules or Knollenman" serves as a testament to Goltzius' artistic prowess and highlights the enduring influence of Mannerism throughout Europe until the early 17th century. This print allows us to appreciate Goltzius' work even centuries later while offering a glimpse into an era where art pushed boundaries and challenged traditional norms.
