Great-grandfather, grandfather, grandson and great-grandchildren, 1909. Creator: Nikolai Georgievich Katanaev
Great-grandfather, grandfather, grandson and great-grandchildren, 1909. This image is from Tipy kazakov: Sibirskie kazaki na sluzhbe i doma (Types of Cossacks: Siberian Cossacks on duty and at home), one of three albums depicting the territories, culture, and way of life of the Cossacks living in the steppe regions of western Siberia and present-day Kazakhstan. These albums were created for and exhibited at the First West Siberian Agricultural, Forestry, and Commercial-Industrial Exhibition in Omsk in 1911. The albums were part of a collection of photographs assembled between 1891 and 1918 by the museum of the West Siberian Branch of the Imperial Russian Geographic Society in Omsk. The photographs in the albums were taken in 1909 by N.G. Katanaev (son of Colonel G.E. Katanaev), during a journey to Cossack settlements in Stepnoi krai (later the oblasts of Ural'sk, Turgai, Akmola, and Semipalatinsk). Omsk State Museum of Regional History and Folklife

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a heartwarming intergenerational moment between a great-grandfather, grandfather, grandson, and great-grandchildren in the year 1909. The image is part of a larger collection taken by Nikolai Georgievich Katanaev during his journey to Cossack settlements in the Stepnoi krai, which later became the oblasts of Ural'sk, Turgai, Akmola, and Semipalatinsk. The photograph is from the album "Tipy kazakov: Sibirskie kazaki na sluzhbe i doma" (Types of Cossacks: Siberian Cossacks on duty and at home), which was created for and exhibited at the First West Siberian Agricultural, Forestry, and Commercial-Industrial Exhibition in Omsk in 1911. The collection of photographs was assembled by the museum of the West Siberian Branch of the Imperial Russian Geographic Society in Omsk between 1891 and 1918. The scene takes place in the vast, open steppe lands of western Siberia and present-day Kazakhstan. The great-grandfather, dressed in traditional Cossack attire, sits proudly with his great-grandchildren on his lap, while his grandson stands beside him, also wearing the distinctive Cossack uniform. The warmth and love shared between the generations is palpable, a testament to the enduring bonds of family and tradition that have long been a part of the Cossack way of life. The photograph offers a glimpse into the past, providing a window into the lives of these Siberian Cossacks and the rich cultural heritage they represent. It serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the stories and traditions of our ancestors, and the enduring power of family connections that span generations.
