EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print depicts the Grand Military Trophy, showcased during the Concerts for the Benefit of the Patriotic Fund in Birmingham Town Hall in 1854. The event took place during the Crimean War, and the trophy was designed and arranged by two prominent figures in the local arts scene: sculptor Peter Hollins and headmaster of the Government School of Art, George Wallis. Hollins contributed a spirited group representing the British Lion and the Imperial Eagle of France, symbolically destroying Despotism. Wallis designed a basso relievo and medallions 'en grisaille' for the decoration of the pedestal and plinth. The relievo featured Fame crowning Lord Raglan and General Canrobert, while the medallions bore the images of Queen Victoria and Napoleon III, Emperor of France. The lighting of the entire display was expertly managed through the use of beacons, which added a peculiarly warlike effect to the scene. This photograph offers a glimpse into the grandeur and patriotic spirit of the time, as the community came together to support their troops and honor the alliance between Britain and France during the Crimean War.
