Goshen Pass, 1872. Creator: Henry Duff Linton

Goshen Pass, 1872. Gorge formed by the passage of the Maury River, Rockbridge County, Virginia, USA, which extends nearly nine miles between its frowning walls! At its southeastern entrance a spring of sulphur-water gushes out of a rock in the middle of the stream which traverses this Cyclopean gorge. The river-waters, pure and sweet, flow around the Acherontic pool, as if shunning contact with a liquid of so infernal a savor that it is perceptible at a great distance...Words are of little use, and even the pencil fails, for that can give but one side at a time of this gigantic and horrible chasm. Overhanging crags, black and blasted at their summits, or bristling with stark and gnarled pines, tower in places into the very heavens, six, seven, eight hundred feet above the stream. Lower down, monstrous rocks threaten to topple and crush the fool-hardy wayfarer who ventures beneath their dreadful masses. From " Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American Artists" Vol. I, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1872]

Goshen Pass, 1872 - A Glimpse into the Cyclopean Gorge

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures the awe-inspiring beauty and grandeur of Goshen Pass in Rockbridge County, Virginia. Taken by Henry Duff Linton in 1872, this image transports us to a time when nature's wonders were still being discovered. The gorge formed by the Maury River stretches nearly nine miles between its imposing walls, leaving visitors humbled by its sheer magnitude. At the southeastern entrance of this majestic chasm lies a remarkable sight – a spring of sulphur-water gushing out from a rock amidst the flowing stream. The river-waters, pure and sweet, gracefully meander around an enigmatic pool known as Acherontic. Linton's vivid description paints an even more dramatic picture of this extraordinary landscape. Overhanging crags loom above like ancient sentinels reaching towards heaven itself. Their blackened summits or gnarled pines create an eerie contrast against the sky. Lower down, colossal rocks precariously perch on ledges, threatening those who dare venture beneath their immense weight. Even with words falling short and pencils unable to capture every facet simultaneously, Linton's photograph offers us a glimpse into this gigantic and horrifying chasm that defies human comprehension. It is through such visual records that we can appreciate both the power and fragility of our natural world. Preserved within "Picturesque America; or The Land We Live In" edited by William Cullen Bryant in 1872, Linton's work continues to inspire wonderment today as it reminds us of nature's ability to leave us breathless with its unyielding beauty.
