"Gathering Wood" by Edouard Frère, 1876. Creator: Unknown. "Gathering Wood" by Edouard Frère, 1876. Creator: Unknown

"Gathering Wood" by Edouard Frere, 1876. Engraving of a painting. This picture...from the recent exhibition...at Messrs. Agnew's gallery, shows the more pathetic side of Edouard Frere's art and sympathy with French peasant life. It is winter and a snow-covered landscape; the occupation of the figures tells of poverty and privation and labour in all weathers; and that labour must be shared by the aged grandam and the youngest children alike. The only fuel procurable to keep out the cruel cold...and to boil the soupe maigre or the pot-au-feu must be gathered from a wood or coppice, whether near or distant. Yet, even in this saddening subject, the pleasant geniality of the painter makes itself felt in the pretty incident of the little boy cheerfully putting out his small strength to the utmost to bind up, unaided, the slender faggot which is his contribution to the family comfort'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876

Gathering Wood

EDITORS COMMENTS
by Edouard Frère, created in 1876, is a poignant and evocative depiction of French peasant life during the winter months. The engraving, which is based on a painting displayed at Messrs. Agnew's gallery, reveals the more compassionate side of Frère's art. The scene is set against a backdrop of a snow-covered landscape, where the harsh realities of poverty and privation are on full display. The figures in the painting are engaged in the laborious task of gathering wood for fuel, an essential necessity to keep out the cruel cold and to prepare meager soups or hearty stews. The aged grandam and the youngest children are seen working together, sharing the burden of this essential chore. The only source of warmth and comfort for the family depends on the wood they can collect, whether it be from a nearby wood or a distant coppice. Despite the somber subject matter, Frère's painting exudes a sense of geniality and warmth. The little boy in the foreground, with a cheerful expression on his face, puts out his small strength to bind up a slender faggot, his contribution to the family's comfort. This incident adds a touch of pleasantness to the otherwise melancholic scene, highlighting the resilience and determination of the peasant community in the face of adversity. The "Illustrated London News" of 1876 described this painting as one that "makes itself felt in the pretty incident of the little boy cheerfully putting out his small strength to the utmost to bind up, unaided, the slender faggot which is his contribution to the family comfort." This poignant observation encapsulates the essence of Frère's masterpiece, which continues to resonate with viewers even today, offering a glimpse into the lives of the humble and hardworking peasant communities of the past.
