EDITORS COMMENTS
This fragment, titled as "Fragment with the Transfiguration of Christ (Resurrection)" or alternatively known as "The Resurrection of Christ," dates back to the early 16th century, approximately between 1515 and 1520. The creator of this masterpiece remains unknown, but it is believed to be the work of the Dutch artist Jan Joest or Jan Joest of Kalkar, also known as Jan Joest van Haarlem or Jan Joest van Kalkar. The painting is an oil on panel work, depicting the biblical scene of the Transfiguration of Christ, which is also symbolically linked to the Resurrection. In this scene, Jesus is shown in the midst of three apostles, Peter, James, and John, on a mountain. Jesus is radiantly dressed in white, his halo illuminating the scene, as he is transfigured before the astonished eyes of his disciples. The other two apostles are clad in simple, dark robes, their faces filled with awe and reverence. The vibrant use of color in this fragment is striking, with the white robes of Christ and the apostles standing out against the darker background. The clothing of the figures is meticulously rendered, with intricate details and folds, showcasing the artist's skill and attention to detail. The painting is a testament to the rich artistic heritage of the Low Countries during the Renaissance period in Europe. This fragment is now preserved in the Rijksmuseum in the Netherlands, where it continues to inspire and captivate visitors from around the world. The scene of the Transfiguration of Christ is a significant one in Christian theology, symbolizing the divine nature of Jesus and his ultimate triumph over death through the Resurrection. This painting serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring influence of the New Testament and the profound impact it has had on art and culture throughout history.
