The Fortress of Dowlatabad in the Deccan Plateau, India, c1860
The Fortress of Dowlatabad in the Deccan Plateau, India, c1860. The Indian Rebellion of 1857 began in the town of Meerut and soon erupted into other mutinies and civilian rebellions across many regions of Company-ruled north-central India. The rebellion posed a considerable threat to British power in that region and it was contained only with the fall of Gwalior on 20 June 1858. The rebellion is also often known as the Indian Mutiny, the Sepoy Mutiny, the Great Rebellion, the Revolt of 1857 and occasionally, in India, as the First War of Independence. From The History of the Indian Mutiny, volume VII, by Charles Ball, published by The London Printing & Publishing Company (c1860)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1860, capturing the majestic Fortress of Dowlatabad in the Deccan Plateau, India. The image serves as a powerful reminder of a significant event in Indian history - the Indian Rebellion of 1857. The rebellion, also known as the Indian Mutiny or Sepoy Mutiny, originated in Meerut and quickly spread across north-central India. It posed a substantial threat to British power in the region, leading to numerous mutinies and civilian rebellions. Only with the fall of Gwalior on June 20th, 1858 was British control restored. In this photograph, we witness an imposing fortification rising against a plain landscape. The intricate details of its architecture hint at its historical significance and strategic importance during those tumultuous times. Streets wind through the fortress complex, revealing glimpses into daily life within its walls. Charles Ball's engraving from his publication "The History of the Indian Mutiny" provides us with a valuable glimpse into this pivotal moment in history. As we gaze upon this monochrome scene frozen in time, we are reminded of both the resilience shown by those who fought for their independence and Britain's determination to maintain control over Hindoostan. This print is not only a visual delight but also serves as an important historical document that allows us to reflect upon one chapter among many that shaped India's journey towards independence from colonial rule.
